Legion Academy: Daria's notes

The Legion Academy Ten weeks of courses ("modules") Ten hours a day EVERY DAY Three "days" off due to illness/the unexpected (who knows what will happen?) Passing five modules?  "Provisional pass" (Blue Team) Passing ten modules?  "Complete pass" (Gold Team) TEN MODULE IDEAS Preserving evidence Interviewing and interrogation Surveillance Media relations (IT'S GONNA BE IMPORTANT) Courtrooms and the legal system (MIGHT GET ARRESTED/GO TO TRIAL) Firearms and non-lethal weapons Detaining criminals and suspects Civilian rescue Close quarter battle (!!!) Questions * "How badly do you want it?"  Courses should test Legionnaire resilience and develop inner strength as well as physical strength. *  Don't want the modules to be so hard that they become "survival of the luckiest". *  Armalin:  set the barrier high enough so that jumping it is difficult, but not that it is impossible *  NOTHING SHOULD BE PURPOSELESS!  If you can&

Two Paths

"You need to stop taking this so seriously," Charles said. Before Daria could answer, Sandi interrupted.  "I disagree.  You need to take it more seriously." "Did I even invite you in here?" Daria said. Daria, Sandi, and Charles were sitting on various chairs in the mismatched furniture in Daria's room.  Daria was in her recliner, Sandi sat on the couch and Charles found a stiff-backed wooden chair in the kitchen he had dragged out to the living room. "No," Sandi said.  "I'm not going to wait for permission." "Listen you two," Charles said. "If...if this is all that the Legion can be - if all we can do is raise money for charity and look pretty.  That would be enough.  Dayenu." "Charles," Daria said, closing her eyes in agitation.  "Stark's goal was that we could be something special.  Do you really think that doing charity meet-and-greets is really that special?

Academy

Some things coming up in the future can best be answered by the word "Academy".  Daria will be going "all in" on the idea of the Legion.  But what she's going to ask of the members is an important commitment.  They'll either have to be as committed to the idea of Legionnaires sort of being modern day do-gooders as she is, or they'll have to just be let go.  After all, if the Legionnaires are going to be something like superheroes, there's no half-assing it. I've thought about reactions to the Big Question that Daria will pose about two or three posts down the line. Daria:   Is in it for the long haul.   The leadership experience has changed her. Jane:  The answer is "no", at least, not now.  Real life has taken her away. Quinn :  It's the most exciting thing she's ever done.  She's in. Sandi:  She wonders why it took so long to get here.  Of course, she's in. Stacy:  The Legion is at least as important to her a

The storm

"So why did you do it?" Charles said.  "All you're doing is just sticking your thumbs in the bear's eye.  By 'bear' I mean Colonel Armalin.   You know that he watches video of these meetings." "He's like Dawn Hall," Daria said. "One of the Busiest People on Earth, trademark.  I'll bet you fifteen cents that he doesn't watch this at all.  And no, he's not gotten back in touch with me." "Daria," Charles said, "he's doing you a favor by not getting in touch with you.  Mack once had a chat with Armalin.  Trust me, those are the kinds of chats that make you very uncomfortable." "If you want to live your life in pants-wetting terror of Kyle Armalin, Chuck, be my guest," Daria said.  "I'm made of sterner stuff.  Therefore, I've passed the ball off to a neutral observer.  Jodie is going to give a report on hurricane rescue and the active measures we can tak

The car had been sold weeks previously.  It was drawing too much attention, there were too many unanswered questions about who he was and what he was doing there.  So he downgraded his nice car to a old Nissan, and he downgraded further after he was recognized again. He got rid of the Nissan.  He just walked everywhere.  It wasn't as if there was anyone who was going to be able to hurt him.  Even though he had the feeling that he was being followed - or at least closely watched - the creepy-crawlies decided to leave him alone. He dyed his hair red.  He grew a beard, he wore a knit cap tightly over his head, he smudged the bridge of his nose.  When he looked in the mirror, he had to admit he strongly looked like someone else. It wasn't as if he was really roughing it.  Like it or not, he still needed the money that came from the cash card, and he still had his real ID.  But he had been making several cash withdrawals, squirreling the money away in various places, se

Starry Night

The story so far:  As the Legion prepares to enter a new phase of existence, and after Elsie makes demands on Mack to known the entire story of the falling out between Tom and the Legionnaires, Julia arrives at Elsie's doorstep with a display of shock and awe to act as dissuasion from pressing the matter.  Meanwhile, Daria, Jane and Quinn check an item off their Legion 'to do' list by showing up at the Young People's Choice Awards. In the background, someone screamed.  It was a member of a rock quartet in heavy rotation on Hits One.  His voice was intelligible yet cut through the party atmosphere like a razor blade. "Why has he been screaming all this time?" Daria said. "I guess he heard his own song," Jane said, smirking.  "That's the advantage of being a telepath.  You can just express your opinions without noise pollution." Daria guided Jane away from the crowd.  "Watch out," Daria warned. "You know," Jane

Profit and Loss

Newest ep:  Elsie and Mack have an unpleasant discussion. (* * *) Angier and Mack were finishing up the 18th hole.  It was what Mack's grandmother used to call "a blessed sunny day".  Even though he was a trained athlete, he was still getting used to the subtleties of golf. "Golf," Angier told him, "is not like football, or baseball, or basketball.  The concept of an 'insurmountable lead' doesn't exist.  You can be four strokes ahead of your nearest opponent, you've got two holes to go, the 17 is a par-four and the wind is at your back.  And then you get the yips.  Before you know it you've double-bogeyed the hole and your confidence is destroyed.  You go from winner to loser in the blink of an eye." "People think that life is football," Angier said.  "But smart people know that life is golf.  Patient accumulation, loving care spent on each instant, never resting on your laurels." As the cart chugged

Resignation

Daria felt that she was in a ditch again.  There was nothing more that she wanted to do than to stay in bed and eat Doritos all day. Unfortunately, her day was packed with personal improvement projects of all sorts.  There was a fitting for the Young People's Choice Awards, and she looked forward to it the way she looked forward to having her teeth removed anally. (Daria! You CAN'T go to the Y.P.C.A. looking like a frump, and I'm not going to have the three of us wearing our Legion uniforms! Quinn said when she let Daria know that a fashion designer was already on the way to Legion Tower.) There was a review of reports from the National Legion chapters, there was a three hour workout, there was personal reading she had assigned herself.  From the beginning of the day to the end of it, there was no time for just goofing off and watching the sun shine. There was a loud knock on her door.  Daria reached out with her mind to figure out who was on the other side.

Candidate Elections

Regional Candidate Nomination Process 1.  Has to have been in National Legion as a founding member of their local chapter.  (In the future, when the NL celebrates its three year anniversary, the restriction will be changed 'has to have been a member of the NL for a minimum of three years'.) [DM:  This certainly keeps Johnny-come-latelies from being candidates.  I like the suggestion, in order to be the National Leader you have to show you put your money where your mouth is, so to speak.] 2.  Has to have been involved in two national initiatives of the NL during each year of their membership time. [DM:  There was a request from some Legionnaires - Karen, Trent, et. al. - that in addition, the RCs shouldn't have held any leadership position either in the Chapters or outside, say at the secondary school level.  Think of it as the "anti-brown nose rule".  I get the idea that people who want power shouldn't be allowed to have it.  Unfortunately, I suspect
