Academy

Some things coming up in the future can best be answered by the word "Academy".

Daria will be going "all in" on the idea of the Legion.  But what she's going to ask of the members is an important commitment.  They'll either have to be as committed to the idea of Legionnaires sort of being modern day do-gooders as she is, or they'll have to just be let go.  After all, if the Legionnaires are going to be something like superheroes, there's no half-assing it.

I've thought about reactions to the Big Question that Daria will pose about two or three posts down the line.

Daria:  Is in it for the long haul.   The leadership experience has changed her.
Jane:  The answer is "no", at least, not now.  Real life has taken her away.
Quinn:  It's the most exciting thing she's ever done.  She's in.
Sandi:  She wonders why it took so long to get here.  Of course, she's in.
Stacy:  The Legion is at least as important to her as her family.  In, but not out of any great commitment to do great things, rather, to stay with the people she knows and loves.
Tiffany:  Her life has taken her in another direction, but if she wants in later, she'll be accepted with open arms.
Charles:  In, with misgivings.  He's in, but he might not stay in.  It really wasn't the future he planned for himself.  He might still be wrestling with "high weirdness".
Brittany:  The Legion is a respite from what she's learned about her mother.  She fears that someday she'll become schizophrenic.  She's in out of necessity.
Tom:  It depends on whether or not he can ever put the pieces back together.  If the atmosphere is just too hostile on his return, he has other options.  But after his decision to make changes in his life NOW, he will be a force for good no matter what.
Mack:  I suspect that Mack will have to think about the matter.  He knew he wanted to make a difference in the world, but as a modern-day superhero?  He still has to wrap his mind around that.
Jodie:  What better place in the world for research?  In.
Julia:  I don't know how long Julia will be staying with the Legion.  Her duties to USAES and the complication of Tom (maybe) returning as a full-time member after BG finishes his arc might limit her options.
Fran:  I've strongly avoided using Fran because I don't have a good handle on that character. I don't know if she'd stay or went.  I suspect that she'd tag along if it looked like a majority are in.
Trent:  Trent doesn't even know what he needs right now.  He's a real wild card.
Jamie:  He loves the entire idea.  It's like a sport that can actually help people if you win, like a version of football where touchdowns save lives.  He's in.
Karen:  I suspect she's in out of sheer curiousity.  She'd be in with Sandi - "About time".

  1. I'm with Sandi and Karen; it's about freakin' time!

  2. I can agree with almost all of this. Mack and Charles - I see them both leaving for a period of time simply because they haven't done anything else and they don't want to get tied down before they can have some other experiences. Basically, they feel as Jane does, but the call will never be as strong with them as it is with a 'Wandering Lane'. Give them both a year of so somewhere else, just having experiences where they won't be first seen as Legionnaires, and then, they'll come scratching at the back door, wanting someone to let them back in.

As for Fran - I don't know if she's going to stay around, either. As it was mentioned in 'Little Girl Found', some Legionnaires came there because they had nowhere else to go. Fran will be grateful for their help and will always visit - she'll help if they need it - but she needs to go and rebuild her life somewhere. Once she does that - I can see her coming back in a few years in order to help others as the Legion helped her. Fran will stay for the present, getting that advanced training (so she can help others), but the day will come when she's just going to appear with packed bags and ask for a ride somewhere.

Tom. He'll be back. The atmosphere will be cool, but if he wants to return, he has a place. (After all, as Daria said, 'he's a jerk, but he's our jerk') As for Julia - as we know from 'No One Is To Blame' and 'Grab-ass and Gutter Talk', what was thought to happen didn't, not really - but not because of anything on Tom's part. They're NEVER going to be friends, but they'll work together effectively and if he tries, she'll at least come to respect him as a fellow Legionnaire.

Julia? As we saw in 'The Cop and The Criminal', she plans to have a permanent presence with the Legion - even if she's on reserve duty because of her other responsibilities. I see her also in the manner of Warren Worthington III in the X-Men - if the Legion ever needs real money because of damages or something else, she'll be more than willing to cover it.
