LLH in the DC Heroes System: Will

We normally don't think of Will in the DC Heroes system, except when it comes to resisting some sort of mental attack.  The write-up in the DC Heroes v3 edition says this about Will:  "This Attribute represents a Character's ability to draw conclusions and his/her willpower in general."  If INT is "mental DEX", then WILL is "mental STR".

Benchmarks

1-2.  The individual possesses the will to face a new morning and confront the obstacles of a normal life.
3-4.  This person has a focused dedicated will and can summon the courage to save victims from hazardous situations such as burning buildings.  He might naively risk his life for stories or glory.
5-6.  This person has exceptional self-discipline and can remain rational and calm during a crisis.
7-8.  This individual possesses the resolve to conquer any human, rational threat or fear, save death.
9-10.  The individual possesses the resolve to override self-preservation and enter an obviously unsurvivable battle.
11-12.  The will is of an unyielding determination of fanatical strength and the individual is fully capable of confronting sanity-threatening situations and mystical phenomena with no loss of resolve.
13-15.  This person possesses superhuman resolve to overcome paranormal situations beyond the scope of human comprehension.
16-18.  This individual has sufficient willpower to wield great power with unfailing confidence or arrogance.
19-21.  Individuals at this level of willpower can dominate situations that would have planetary repercussions.
22-24.  This individual's will is formidable enough to confront intergalactic menaces without fear.
25-27.  This individual possesses god-like mental resolve and is accustomed to overcoming universal menaces and threats.
28-30.  This individual is resolute even in the face of universal destruction.

Okay.  Let's see who can face down a bad situation in the Legion, then.

WILL only

18:  Jodie
15:  Quinn
12:  Charles, Tiffany, Karen
10:  Jane, Julia, Jamie
7:  Brittany, Mack
6:  Sandi, Fran
5:  Daria
4:  Stacy
2:  Tom, Trent

The ones that really seem out of place are Jodie and Tom.  I suspect that Jodie's will is so strong due to her powers.  She basically has a little automatic psychiatrist subroutine in her head that keeps her from going crazy.

As for everyone between Jodie and Tom, it becomes a list of "who has seen some pretty bad shit in their time?"  Quinn has seen a lot of bad shit: a rape attempt, the attentions of both a malevolvent magic-user and a grabby rock star, dimensional travel, having to lead the Legion, etc. etc.  Charles with his power transformations, Tiffany near death from ghosting, Karen's screwed up past all give them high willpower.

So why didn't Tom get high willpower, too?  Probably because getting from one end of the zombie gauntlet to the other was a really horrific struggle, and his way of dealing with it is to compartimentalize and forget it.  He has the potential to be a great hero and indeed, as far as the Corps of Ringbearers is concerned, was actually a great hero.  But he had to fight his way through basically negative willpower to do it.

Tom has never really been satisfied with anything, and his journey is really just starting even after all he has experienced.  Some people get "paid off" by the School of Hard Knocks in one lump sum; others have to have it jammed up their asses a nickel at a time.  Tom is clearly the latter, still trying to make sense of everything that has happened, and his multiple roles (rich guy, reluctant hero, outcast, kid) clang against each other like pots falling down stairs.  Maybe he'll have better stats in the future.

Comments

  1. Well, compared to Julia Carlyle (who is a 'Royal Who Actually Does Something'), Tom is a 'Sheltered Aristocrat',and he's never had to deal with the real-world as the average person has. He's weaker mentally than he realized, and when even his advantages couldn't protect him from his bad behavior, he made the choice to leave. As the Sergeant Major in charge of the recruits said to Colonel Shaw of his enlisted friend in 'Glory': 'Let him grow up some more.' That's what Tom has to do - and I have a feeling that it wont be easy.
