Battle Royale: Round One.
The rules:
All players can reach all other players. This is a restricted area, so players don't have to spend APs moving into position.
No powers are allowed to be used, but no one is wearing an inhibitor. This basically sets all players at BG's levels in his first writeup, which we'll assume is correct for this exercise.
No player that we assume has martial arts: Sandi, Brittany, or Tiffany - is allowed to use any of them.
No weapons.
No obstructions, which means nothing to block with or hide behind.
Players are in plastic helmeted workout gear. No one is really delivered a damaging below. If BODY is reduced to zero or below, they are not really knocked unconscious, but Sergeant Nemec judges the opponent's attack - or the hypothetical damage from various attacks - as good enough to knock out an opponent.
Round One begins.
Stacy jumps and attacks Karen.
Karen DODGES, forcing a +1 column shift to her OV for the rest of the round, but she now has no other actions.
Stacy DEX = 15, Karen DEX = 6.
Stacy only needs a 4 for a success.
Roll: 10 + 9 = 19!
Stacy earns four column shifts, but Karen's DODGE lowers it to three column shifts.
Stacy's EV is STR = 5. Good thing she's not in cat form!
Karen's RV is BODY = 8. Tonka tough!
On the Result table, starting with a value of "N", Stacy shifts over three columns to the left.
Damage: 3 points. Karen takes a hard shot that she feels through her toes. Her Body drops from BODY = 8 to BODY = 5.
Jane is up next. She rolled a "9" as well, taking her up to 43.
Jane figures she can give Quinn the bum's rush off the field.
Quinn does not dodge. "Let's see what you've got!"
Jane DEX = 6, Quinn DEX = 4.
Jane needs a 9 for success.
Roll: 3+8 = 11! She gets one column shift on the result table (Column shifts start at 11.)
Jane's EV is STR =3, Quinn's RV is BODY = 2.
Damage = 2 points, but the one column shift takes it to "A" (All). Quinn takes 3 points of damage, falls to -1 and Sergeant Nemec whistles Quinn off the field.
Julia curses the "4" that she rolled, putting her behind Stacy and Jane.
As a well-trained member of The Alliance, she knows that she's much stronger and quicker than most of the Legionnaires. So she decides a MULTIPLE ATTACK is the way to go. Attack several members at once!
She targets Trent, Brittany, Tom, and Tiffany simultaneously. If her Speed Force was always on, she could attack more opponents, but the # she can attack is limited to the minimum of her DEX and four. In this group, the highest OV of DEX is 7. Two opposing column shifts will be added to whatever the result is.
Roll: 2 + 6 = 8. Not great. Normally a 5 would make the hit, but with the two OV shifts that meant she needed a 9. NO HIT.
Clearly, she underestimated Brittany. She might pay for that.
Daria is up next. "Damn," she thinks. "Who is the weakest target here? Jodie? Fine, Jodie, then." Jodie will take her chances. "You knocked out that scammer, but you won't knock me out."
Daria DEX = 3, Jodie DEX = 4. Both are in the same column, but Jodie's higher DEX raises Daria's success # from 11 to 12.
Roll: 5 + 9 = 14! Nice roll. The column shifts still start at 11, for two column shifts.
Daria STR = 2, Jodie BODY = 2. Normally damage is 1, but with the two column shifts, that makes it "All + 1" or 3 points of damange.
Jodie's BODY drops to -1. As a consternated Jodie is forced off the field from Nemec, Daria smirks, "Wow. You were wrong about something. A first."
Charles is up next. He knows that Jamie is up next and would rather not fight him. So he'll strike first. No special maneuvers.
"Let's see if those muscles are REAL muscles," Jamie says.
Chuck's DEX = 12, Jamie DEX = 5.
Roll = 4 + 5 = 9. Successful…but no column shifts.
Chuck's STR =3, Jamie BODY = 4. Same column but since Chuck's value is lower he has to subtract 1 RAP.
He gets 1 RAP. But 1 - 1 = 0.
Jamie grunts. "Yep," he says. "Gym muscles."
Jamie is next. He's not stupid. He suspects that Chuck is more invulnerable than he lets on. Time to go after a weaker opponent.
"Fran!" he shouts! "Let's see what you got!"
"Okay!" Fran says, smiling.
Jamie goes into a whirlwind FLAILING ATTACK. He's more likely to hit Fran but less likely to damage her.
Fran loses two column shifts in defending the attack, but gains three in resisting it.
Jamie DEX = 5 and Fran DEX = 10. Normally, he needs 15 to hit, but with the furious attack, he just needs 11.
10 + 9 = 19! BOOM!
He not only punches Fran, he gets four column shifts….but….
…that falls to just one due to the nature of the flailing attack.
Jamie STR = 5, Fran BODY = 4.
Normally, this would be two points of damage without adjustment. But we go over to 3 points due to the column shift.
Fran falls to BODY = 1. She is very perturbed.
Mack is next. He figures he'll just fight normally until he gets a brilliant idea.
He figures, "Well, gotta fight Wildcat sometime. Why not now? Maybe I can hurt her a little bit."
Mack attacks Stacy. Having attacked Karen, she can't dodge.
Mack DEX = 7, Stacy DEX = 15.
Roll = 4 + 10 = 14. Someone else would have been eating teeth, but he doesn't even come close. Doesn't put a hand on her.
He now remembers just how FAST Stacy is.
Fran is up next. "Revenge against Jamie?" she askes herself, still a bit woozy. "No. Don't think like a dummy."
She knows that Karen took a hit, so she decides to see just how good her roommate is.
Karen is still in DODGE mode.
Fran DEX = 10, Karen DEX = 6.
Roll: 9 + 5 = 14!
Fran earns two column shifts, but it falls to one on the Dodge.
Fran STR = 3, Karen STR = 6.
Karen takes another point of BODY damange, falling to BODY = 4.
"What is this?" Karen thinks as she tumbles away from a kick to the side, "pick on the newbie day?"
Tiffany is next. "Who's the clueless gorm? I need to warm up on someone. Not allowed to use Martial Arts, which sucks. Just standard boxing."
Cursing, she goes after Tom.
Tom figures he can handle Tiffany without her meteor hammer and her not allowed to use Krav Maga on him.
Tiffany DEX = 6, Tom DEX = 3.
Roll: 6 + 3 = 9. That's the minimum need to hit. No column shifts. Damn, she's rusty.
Tiffany STR = 2, Tom BODY = 2. She delivers a body punch that Tom never sees, and Tom's BODY falls to BODY = 1.
It's Karen's turn. But Karen is, uh, busy. No attacks.
Tom is up next. He figures that Julia is going to kick his ass and just hasn't caught up with him yet.
"Fuck it," he says, "why wait? At least it will give her satisfaction."
So Tom, with his minimal skills, walks into the thresher.
"Huh?" thinks Julia. "He's fucking CRAZY."
Tom DEX = 3, Julia DEX = 15. Roll is 12. Pretty good. If he was attacking a thug, that would be a bloody nose minimum.
Julia walks backward away from Tom's punch with the absolute minimal effort.
"I'm insulted," Julia says, "at your even *trying*".
That's when Tom figures it out.
Barring a lucky punch, he LITERALLY HAS NO SKILL to hit her. (Success roll required is 21, which can only be achieved by doubles.)
Sandi is next. "Never tried to hit Mack before," she thinks. "I wonder how well he fights. I can use this exercise for intel."
Sandi DEX = 5, Mack DEX = 7.
Roll = 6 + 1 = 7. No result.
"You're quicker than average," Sandi thinks. "I'll keep that in mind."
Brittany is next. She goes after Charles. "I used to do this in high school when you got 'feisty'!"
Brittany DEX = 7. Charles DEX = 12.
Roll: 9 + 7 = 16! "Hi-yaahhhHHHH!"
She catches him with a full column shift of damage!
Brittany STR = 3, Charles BODY = 14.
She gives him a karate chop across the chest, but even with the column shift, no effect!
"Wow," Brittany thinks. "That was like hitting hard rubber."
Trent is next. "Man, I don't even know where to start."
He sees Brittany' s failed attack. "Maybe she hurt herself," he thinks.
Trent DEX =4, Brittany DEX = 7.
Roll = 2+2 = 4. A crap roll, but DOUBLES. He rolls again.
Roll #2 = 3+6 = 9. 4 + 9 = 13!
He almost hits Brittany, who parries the shot at the last minute.
"Pretty good," she smiles, "for an AMATEUR!"

ReplyDeleteOkay, I just want to know one thing—what about Recovery Rolls? I mean, couldn't Karen Recover from Stacy's initial attack before Fran started in on her? Just a bit?
ReplyDeleteMy understanding has always been that Recovery takes place only about an hour after a fight is over.
DeleteAll right.
DeleteWhat about if they have healing or regeneration powers/abilities?
DeleteMinimum regeneration is one hour: 10 APs of time. Despite what you read in the manual, Regeneration as a power subtracts time in APs needed to recover.
DeleteIf a character had Regeneration 10, they'd check ever 10-10 APs, or every 0 APs vs. Bashing Recovery. That would mean they could do a Bashing Recovery check every round of combat. Regeneration of 11 would mean that they could check TWICE PER ROUND of Bashing Recovery, and once per round of Killing Combat Recovery.
I haven't had the chance to go through the DC books in depth yet. This kind of reminds me of two nations' military reps working together; one of the first things they have to do is coordinate because of the different protocols and so forth.
DeleteIt's almost like DC is the Cold War-era Warsaw Pact, whereas Marvel is NATO; DC is more powerful and has more forces, while Marvel has better training and more options for their forces to use. Still learning the DC stuff... and my God. A DC 'street-level' hero could apply for Avengers pr S.H.I.E.L.D. membership, from what I've seen.
DC Heroes modules (sold separately) would usually come with a recommendation of how many Hero Points your characters should have been created with in order to use the module. "Four to seven characters, 1000 to 2000 points each."
